Twitter announced that , its traditional limit doubles from 140 to 280 characters per tweet.

“In late September, we launched a test that expanded the 140-character limit so every person around the world could express themselves easily in a tweet,” said Aliza Rosen, Twitter’s product manager.

Most tweets will now fit 280 characters, up from 140. The new limit will extent to almost all 40 languages Twitter supports. The new character length won’t apply to Japanese, Korean or Chinese-language tweets. Those languages can convey twice as much information in less space, so tweets will remain at 140 characters, Twitter said.
