IPOS: New practice of examiner-initiated informal communications with applicants

In current practice, communications between examiners and applicants are carried out formally via written opinions and responses. The Intellectual Property Office of Singapore (IPOS) will be implementing a new practice of examiner-initiated informal communications. Under this, examiners may informally communicate with patent applicants by, for example, email, telephone and/or face-to-face interviews. Effective from 15 September 2017 this practice will be applicable to all Singapore patent applications.
Global increase in Legal technology patents to 484% in last 5 years

There has been a 484 percent increase in legal technology patents. “Technological innovation across the financial and professional services industries has grown rapidly over the last few years,” says Charlotte Rushton, managing director of Thomson Reuters. She added saying “Law firms expanding into sectors such as management consultancy are being exposed to new practices and implementing technology changes as a result”.

Ford has revealed the next step towards its fully autonomous cars through a patent application which describes removable steering wheel and pedals. Automotive News reports the U.S. patent application describes a dashboard assembly with a “receiving niche” that can receive the removable steering wheel or a removable “filler module” for when the wheel is not in use.

The patent will allow Pfizer to exclusively sell its pneumococcal conjugate vaccine (PCV) designed to protect against 13 types of bacteria and prevent other companies from producing the same vaccine till 2026.
A major loophole allowing patent term extensions for certain Swiss-style claims closed in Australia

The Australian Administrative Appeals Tribunal opened the door for patent term extensions based on a Swiss-form claim which enlarged the scope of applications of patent term extensions considerably. Recently, the Full Federal Court has reversed that decision. Patent term extensions continue to be available for product claims and claims to processes of preparing a product that uses recombinant DNA technology. However, other method and Swiss-form claims cannot support a patent term extension. Purpose-limited product claims are yet to be considered in this context.
